Charter Boat: Blue Shark
Blue Shark operates out from St. Justinian’s, a small harbour in Ramsey on the outskirts of St. David’s. It is an ideal departure point to take full advantage of the great fishing grounds around the islands of Ramsey and the Bishops and Clerks. Skomer, Skokholm, Grassholm and The Smalls lighthouse are all within easy reach, along with reef’s, such as the Hats and Barrels. There are some good sandbanks locally, which can hold some good bass, tope, ray and flat fish. It is also a good departure point for the numerous offshore wrecks of the Celtic sea and Irish Sea, with access to St George's channel and many large wrecks within less than an hours steam!
Bass
Bass fishing is available on trips from 4 hours plus, either drifting the local reefs or sandbanks dependent on the size of tides and duration chosen. We mainly use live bait for the bass fishing which is caught at the start of the trip, or will need to be pre-ordered, but a wide selection of lures is also available on board.
(Please note; that during 2024 between February 1st - March 31st, a two bass per angler bag limit applies, any bass caught out of this season have to be returned alive).
Inshore reef
There are many inshore reefs only a few minuets away, that boast large numbers of Pollock up to 10 lbs being regularly caught, with a year on year growing number of coalfish appearing and getting bigger in size each year, with lots of 3lbs fish caught in 2020. There are also a few codling in residence on these reefs along with wrasse pouting and gurnard.
Sand banks
There are several large sandbanks in the area, which can offer bass, plaice, turbot, dabs, gurnard and weaver fish on the drift, with rays, tope and spurs possible whilst at anchor.
Wrecking
With many wrecks to choose from and lots within under an hours steam, St. Justinian’s is an ideal departure point to target these fish holding structures! There is an abundance of Pollock on these wrecks, taking shelter from the tide to ambush their prey. Many of these wrecks are quite large offering good long drifts and are at depths from 65m – 110m, mostly vessel that had been sunk by U boats during the 1st and 2nd world war. These wrecks are proving to fish very well through the winter months, but are best fished on a small to medium sized tide.
Shark fishing
We also run shark-fishing trips out to the Celtic Deep to target blue sharks, which can be out there in good numbers as the water warms. Shark fishing is a whole boat charter for up to a 12 hour day. Chum is provided in the price, with tackle and bait available with prior notice. The trip is limited to 5 rods fishing.
Please note; Throughout the school holidays and bank holidays we are only able to offer the shorter duration fishing trips: 1 ½ hour mackerel, 3 hour pollack, 4 hour bait and 4 hour bass.
Tuna fishing
Blue Shark Charters is now taking part in the Welsh Tuna CHART (CatcH And Release Tagging) program and is able to offer spaces for single anglers or whole boat charters where anglers will be able to have a go at catching one of the best fighting game fish on the planet! The CHART program has been approved by the Welsh government and is in collaboration with Swansea university. These trips are limited to 4 anglers, all equipment and tackle is provided by us. If you would like to have a go at tuna fishing in wales, please get in touch. Prices start at £800 for a whole boat charter or £200 per angler.
Padrig is a keen angler himself and comes from a family of sea farers whom have all worked the north Pembrokeshire waters for many years. As a child spending his holidays on a fishing boat with his dad and then on to the Passenger boats around Ramsey island he developed his love of fishing and the local waters. He started crewing the passenger trips at 19 and skippering at 22 which he has been doing on and off for the last 18 years, along with skippering survey vessel for the offshore renewable and oil and gas industries.
The Blue Shark is also run by two local fishermen who also have a keen passion for the sport and also being former Ramsey Island boatmen know the area very well, so you can be rest assured you are always in safe and capable hands of skippers and crews who will do their utmost to get you on the fish!
